| Another song in a-minor. One of the serious structural problems with this album is the programming of songs next to one another that have the same key signature. This makes them all run together. Compared with the three songs that precede this, however, "Azure Sands" has more interest and exhibits two and one-half octaves of singing from Yma. She presents the melody in a rich mezzo soprano register and then repeats it in high, Lakmé regions with pure head tone and accentuated rhythm. This high octave singing emerges from Yma's partially closed mouth with a hollow quality. The growl also makes an appearance, is taken quite high in the voice (e at the top of the staff), but obviously without any discomfort. During this song, Yma shows the different ways in which she could produce the growl.
This song, sans Yma, was re-used in a 1973 "R" rated movie for which Les Baxter provided music. The movie, "Sweet Sugar" was an unfortunate, exploitative grade B movie. |
