Another silly title for such a serious extravaganza of high staccati work. During the course of this short piece Yma repeatedly darts up to high C and E in brilliant stacatto cascades. She also provides some unusual glissandi and light, floated tone. There is a wonderful sense of freedom in this selection and Yma's florid accuracy is amazing. Here again, is the "n" used by Yma to preface high flights, and her instinctive use of the dome-like "Awh" vowel for upper register work provides a natural, unforced roundness to her singing. Section C is a repetition of A and B and is brought to a close by Yma singing a slow glissando to high C.
An alternate version of this song was released on the 1997 RevOla CD (CREVO48CD) Yma Sumac Mambo! ..and more. Timed at 2:30 this version is shorter than the released version and it differs only in the level of excitement supplied by Yma and the musicians. This mainly has to do with tempi choices more than anything else. Also included on that CD is an instrumental version, which is enjoyable on its own. When Yma decided to record Mambo Confusion, in Germany, in 1991, it was "Chicken Talk" that was used as the basis for all the "confusion." |
