| "When the Spaniards invaded Peru, the Jivaro warriors fought them with terrifying fire arrows. Sitting on the ground, holding huge bows with their feet, the archers drew back the six-foot-long flaming arrows, and sent them shooting off for the great distances. These arrows spread terror, death and destruction among the soldiers of Spain." (Liner notes from 1956 pressing)
This song can also be heard on a recording made by two Argentinian singers called Christina and Hugo. Their version, however, is called "Himno al Sol" an Argentinian Hymn to the Sun. Although of little importance or impact, this piece has good underlying rhythm which Yma propells forward with her singing. The melody is sung as an obbligato over the accompanying, chanting male chorus. Ritualistic in tone, Yma floats high C's and D's purely and easily, and gives the finish an emphatic accent as she rises and strikes three successive high E naturals of power and vibrancy. |
