| "Hypnosis, regarded as magic, has been used by the Jivaros for centuries as an integral part of their medical and spiritual life. Magic stems, too, from the 'Infierno Verde' or Green Hell which surrounds them. 'Open a road one day,' says the song, 'and it has disappeared the next,' so rapid is the vegetable growth in this hot, humid jungle that is both their trap and their sanctuary." This is a disturbing piece. Although the melody line is slight, Yma manages to use some three and one-half octaves for its execution. This has a definite ceremonial quality that is provided by the male chorus, a relentless, slow drum beat, and Yma's odd, breathy singing on an "Ooh" vowel. She soon alters her vocal placement and vibrato as she begins to wail up and down the staff. |
